The Kaplan Foundation offers funding opportunities to organizations working in the following geographies: New York City, parts of California, the Rocky Mountain West States, and Chicago. Below are the specific funding goals for each of these regions.

Chicago

In Chicago, the Foundation will support youth development programs with emphasis given to organizations that help young people successfully graduate from high school and matriculate into college. Any organization seeking funding must be able to demonstrate how and why its interventions (i.e. college counseling, arts education, mentoring) contributed to students' increased engagement in school, improvement in academic outcomes, grade matriculation, graduation and college attendance. The Foundation will consider proposals from organizations working with youth in all school-age grades.

California

The Foundation is interested in supporting youth development programs located the following counties: San Diego County, Santa Barbara County, Los Angeles County and Mendocino County. "Youth development" programs might include (but are not limited to) organizations which provide youth with opportunities for arts enrichment, leadership development, and academic support or after-school programs.

New York City

As yet, funding goals for New York City have not been determined; we will update our website once a decision has been made.

Rocky Mountain West

In the Rocky Mountain West, the Foundation will consider proposals from organizations working in Wyoming and Colorado. The Foundation has chosen to support two specific funding areas in this region: the environment and reproductive health.

Environment

Prolific mineral extraction and energy development have had a negative impact on land, resources, and communities in the RMW; in fact, excessive mining and energy development can produce significant waste, destroy natural resources and landscapes, and alter ecosystems. The Foundation is interested in funding organizations and programs working to mitigate the negative impacts of mineral extraction and energy development on land through strategies such as recovery of affected lands, increasing efficient mining and energy development practices, and promoting responsible land use and mining efforts.

Reproductive Rights

The Foundation is interested in supporting organizations that protect and promote reproductive rights for women and families with an emphasis on increasing access to reproductive health services, ensuring safe and accessible abortions, and providing affordable contraceptives. Organizations working to increase and promote comprehensive sex education for youth and adolescents will also be considered.
